RESOLUTION OF THE COASTSIDE DEMOCRATS
TO SUPPORT THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT
S. 560 and H.R. 1409
WHEREAS the United States has long recognized that freedom of association includes employees’ right to form and join a union, established in the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948; and
WHEREAS the employee right to join a union and bargain collectively is routinely denied under current labor law through delays, intimidation, threats, illegal firings, and failure to negotiate contracts; and
WHEREAS union membership results in higher wages, safer working conditions, and better benefits for employees that in turn strengthen our economy; and
WHEREAS the Employee Free Choice Act would let employees decide whether they want to hold an election or sign union-authorization cards, known as “card check;” would increase penalties against companies that illegally coerce or intimidate employees; and would bring in a neutral third party to settle contracts not agreed to within three months.
THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Coastside Democrats support the Employee Free Choice Act, S. 560 and H.R. 1409, recognizing the importance of this Act to safeguarding the right of freedom of association, achieving a equitable workplace, and strengthening our democracy.
